, red prada shoes. >>> live to dana bash on capitol hill. there's a vote under way for hagel in terms of secretary of defense. what do we know? >> reporter: that's right. under way as we speak. this is a vote to end the republican filibuster on chuck hagel's nomination to be the next secretary of defense. ten days ago we had the same exact vote and it failed. republicans, enough republicans blocked it so that the filibuster continued. but democrats in the white house only needed one more vote and we think that that is there, at least one more vote. so we believe at the end of this vote, which has approximately ten minutes left, chuck hagel will -- the way will be cleared for him to be secretary of defense. unclear if they'll have a final vote today or wait until tomorrow. but we're watching this to see exactly how it goes down. but one thing we did hear before this started was the republicans who are ardently opposed to him say that even if he is nominated, which i think he will be, he will be too battered and bruised to be an effective secretary of defense. they did one last at least

the nation's new defense secretary chuck hagel. he took the oath of office at a private ceremony this morning. afterwards the secretary told pentagon workers the united states must lead with its allies. he says he believes the military is a force for good and that he is committed to equal benefits for all service members. secretary hagel also touched on those looming budget cuts calling them a reality we need to figure out. those cuts also a top priority for the nation's next treasury secretary. the senate voted about two hours ago to confirm the former white house chief of staff jack lew to that position. is he now set to succeed tim geithner. lew is the former white house budget director and prior to that he was an exec at citigroup. some republicans had criticized lew over compensation the bank gave him during a time when taxpayers bailed the bank out but today 20 republicans voted for him. the final tally 71 to 26. all that despite a squiggly thing he calls a signature. the president is speaking, giving remarks at the business council dinner at the park hyatt in washington. he expected to

at the pentagon, chuck hagel, and then john brennan, his pick for the cia. obviously the benghazi matter is an obstacle for chuck hagel's confirmation and vote there in congress and then this john brennan matter is very important to the issue of these targeted drone strikes, rand paul, the senator from kentucky has said that he is willing to hold up that vote on john brennan. if he doesn't receive assurances from the white house that the united states will not target any drone strikes on americans on american soil. so some of this information i think the administration is hoping will at least for now satisfy some of those members with these concerns, wolf. >> it's going to be a tough battle, i take it. both of these confirmations likely to go through next week. but it's by no means a done deal, is it? >> reporter: it's not a -- especially when you have senators saying they may hold up nominees and so we're going to have to wait and see whether or not senator paul is satisfied with the information that he's getting from the white house. but this is perhaps, you know, a break in an impasse
